Unlock Your Weight Loss: Eat at home more

Here is the second in my series of time-tested tools to lose the extra weight. This week’s topic is where we eat our food.

In today’s fast paced world eating out is normalized and assumed.  It seems like no one eats at home anymore.  I know many 20 somethings who don’t know how to cook anything that isn’t microwavable.

It is incredibly easy not to cook now, we have so many food delivery choices, already made meals, food prepped ready to put in oven, etc.

Three of the many advantages of home cooking are:

  1. It is cheaper. Saves you money! Who doesn’t want this?
  2. Healthier
  3. Improves our relationships with families and friends.

Buying the parts of a meal from the grocery store will be cheaper.

Here is a simple example: Baked salmon and vegetables– frozen wild coho salmon 1.1 lbs. $14.99 (you can use chicken as well), two sweet peppers or zucchini/yellow squash $2, 1 onion $0.70, plus some spices.  This totals about $18 and will make 3-4 servings. Add some rice for $2 more if you want carbs.  This takes about 20 minutes to prepare and about 30 minutes to cook at 350F.  I love this meal for leftovers.  Use the cook once and eat 2-3 times mentality.

A salmon meal out would be at least $20 each plus tip and gas. The clean up for this meal is super quick so no worries about dishes.

Eating at home helps you lose weight because you can control portion size, availability of dessert, quality of the ingredients, control the spice, salt and do not add preservatives. You also get to choose your favorite vegetables; this encourages you to eat all of them 😊.

Cooking can be a fun time for roommates, couples, and families. Eating together is a social experience, slow down and enjoy each other’s company.  Don’t rush to clean up, let everyone share about their day., laugh or cry with each other.  This a great stress reducer.
